Zondag 1 april vond het eerst GIPF
rankingtoernooi van dit jaar plaats. Tegelijkertijd was dit ook meteen de
eerste manche van het GIPF Regelmatigheidcriterium 2001. In totaal namen 18
spelers het tegen elkaar op, waaronder 5 Nederlanders die voor de gelegenheid
naar Antwerpen waren afgezakt.
Het werd een treffen vol
verrassingen. Kurt Van den Brande wist eindelijk af te rekenen met “zijn
eeuwige tweede plaatst” en legde met 5 op 5 als enige een foutloos parcours
af. Niet minder verrassend was de gedeelde tweede plaats van Johan Delvaux en
André De Laet, die met 4 punten een resem aanzienlijk hoger geklasseerde spelers achter
zich konden houden. De derde (zeer aangename) verrassing was dat het vijftal
uit Eindhoven zich meer dan behoorlijk wist staande te houden, met vooral een
speciale vermelding voor Jan Willem Knopper, die met 3 winstpartijen
waarschijnlijk niet alleen zichzelf maar ook zijn EGO-companen een hart onder
de riem stak.

KVDB breaks curse
On Sunday, April 1, the first GIPF ranking tournament of the year took place. At the same time it also was the
first heat of the GIPF Regularity Contest 2001. In total 18 players showed up to compete against each other. 5
Dutchmen made the effort to travel all the way to Antwerp. Good!
The event was full of surprises. Kurt Van den Branden -- who must already have collected about a dozen second
places (and, as such, is the most regular Gipfer) -- finally got what he was desperately looking for: a fist place. He
scored 5 wins in a row. Big relieve; the poor man had started to think that he was never going to get away from
that second place. The performances of André De Laet and Johan Delvaux were also quite unexpected. They
shared the second place with 4 wins each and left a number of considerably higher ranked players behind them. A
third (and very pleasant) surprise was that the Dutchmen appeared to be quite strong players. Especially Jan
Willem Knopper did extremely well with 3 wins. With a bit more experience the Dutch EGO-men will be hurting
the Belgian top players in the near future.
